DSM-5 Criteria for Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Syndrome:
1. It begins early during the developmental stage before the age of 3 years.
2. Abnormalities or deficits are seen at Social (Forming/developing/maintaining relations/ Emotional reciprocation), Communication (Eye contact/ nonverbal communication/ Language/ Facial expressions/Gestures, etc.), Behavioral (Restricted/ Repetitive behaviors),
3. Other symptoms like Intellectual Disability, Irritability, Instability of mood, Hyperactivity and Inattention, Insomnia are also commonly observed.
4. Functional impairment at psychosocial level, avoiding eye contact
5. Ruling out that the symptoms are not due to any other Intellectual disability or Global developmental delay becomes necessary.
It can be managed by various behavioral programs, psychosocial treatment interventions, targeting core behaviors to improve social skills and communication skills may help.
