What is Human Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity (HSP)?
Human Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity (HSP) commonly known as a “semen allergy” is an allergic reaction to proteins found in a partner’s seminal fluid. It is frequently misdiagnosed because localized symptoms of HSP mimic those of yeast infections or certain STIs leading to months or years of unnecessary discomfort.
HSP is actually a Type I immediate hypersensitivity reaction. Most researchers believe the culprit is not the sperm itself, but specific proteins produced by the prostate gland.
Symptoms typically appear within 10 to 30 minutes after exposure. They generally fall into two categories:
• Localized Reactions: The most common form, involving redness, burning, swelling, and itching in the vaginal area.
• Systemic Reactions (Anaphylaxis): In rarer, more severe cases, the reaction spreads throughout the body. This can include hives, difficulty breathing, wheezing, rapid pulse, and even a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Living with HSP can be isolating. It often introduces anxiety into a relationship and can make the prospect of physical closeness feel daunting. If you are navigating this, remember that it is not a reflection of your compatibility with your partner.
HSP is treatable with barrier methods, antihistamines or desensitisation. Having the condition doesn’t mean an end to a healthy sex life or the possibility of starting a family. Open communication and seeking a specialist will significantly help you in managing the condition.
