Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited treatment primarily used for Major Depressive Disorder. It is based on the premise that psychiatric symptoms often arise and persist within a social and interpersonal context, with treatment outcomes closely tied to the quality of the patient’s relationships. The primary goal of IPT is to alleviate psychiatric symptoms by enhancing interpersonal relationships and improving social functioning. The therapy is divided into three phases: the initial phase, which focuses on identifying interpersonal issues and setting goals; the intermediate phase, where targeted problem areas are addressed; and the terminal phase, which consolidates progress and prepares patients for future independent work.
