Female Vaginismus

When there is involuntary tightness or spasms of the vaginal muscles, specifically the pelvic floor muscles, vaginal penetration becomes difficult, painful, or impossible. This condition is called vaginismus. It can occur during sexual intercourse, gynecological exams, or even when attempting to insert a tampon. Vaginismus is often associated with psychological factors like fear, anxiety, or trauma, but it can also have physical components. Sexual trauma or anticipation of pain can cause Vaginismus. There can also be a history of strict religious upbringing in such patients.
Treatment typically involves a combination of pelvic floor physical therapy, relaxation techniques, and counseling or therapy to address any underlying psychological issues.
